What is California Prop 65?

California Prop 65 Explained

California's Proposition 65 is a government regulation that entitles California consumers to special warnings for products that contain certain chemicals. According to the Proposition 65 website:

Proposition 65, officially known as the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986, was enacted as a ballot initiative in November 1986. The proposition protects the state's drinking water sources from being contaminated with chemicals known to cause cancer, birth defects or other reproductive harm, and requires businesses to inform Californians about exposures to such chemicals.

Proposition 65 requires the state to maintain and update a list of chemicals known to the state to cause cancer or reproductive toxicity.

You may have come across this type of label from time to time and wondered what it is. Typical Proposition 65 labels read, "WARNING: This product contains chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer and birth defects or other reproductive harm".

Other Proposition 65 labels for some wood and air products may read, "WARNING: Drilling, sawing, sanding or machining wood products generates wood dust, a substance known to the State of California to cause cancer. Use a respirator or other safeguards to avoid inhaling wood dust".

Below is an example of what the label will look like on our website to a customer in California when checking out with a product that has been marked Prop 65.
